Amanda Ribas was born into a family involved in martial arts. She was introduced to jiu-jitsu and judo at a young age. Despite a brief step away from training to become a dancer, she returned to the gym, where her father took over her training more seriously. Later on, she participated in amateur MMA fights set up by her father. According to Amanda, she wanted to represent Brazil in the Olympics as a judoka, but two knee surgeries led her to change her plans. In 2014, at the age of 21, after training in her family’s gym in Varginha, she decided to pursue a professional MMA career. She has completed her graduation from Grupo Unis Distance Education. In an interview, she talked about her early martial arts career and said,

It was funny because I didn’t even want to fight, but my teammates were training for the tryouts. I was back to Varginha after blowing my knee, and I didn’t want to even hear about sports or get close to the gym. But I went there to watch a training session and saw them preparing for the tryouts, and I felt that fire again.”

Controversy

Possible Doping Charges on Amanda Ribas

USADA removed Amanda Ribas, the new strawweight signee of 2017, due to an anti-doping violation and removed her from the fight against Juliana Lima at the Ultimate Fighter 25 Finale in Las Vegas. The samples were collected earlier before the match in June 2017 and showed some possibly violated results. USADA had worked with the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC), the commission which was responsible for the jurisdiction of the event, on the case related to doping. The UFC gave a statement saying,

Because of her potential anti-doping violation and the proximity to that event, Ribas has been removed from the card and the UFC is currently seeking a replacement,” 1
