Career
NWA UK Hammerlock
Finn Bálor made his professional wrestling debut in a match hosted by NWA UK Hammerlock on November 23, 2001.
In 2002, he co-founded National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) Ireland with Paul Tracy, where he later trained WWE Superstar Becky Lynch. He secured the NWA British Commonwealth Heavyweight Championship on October 27, 2004. Finn and Paul Tracey competed in a handicap match against Dru Onyx on October 30, 2004. He participated in the NWA 57th Anniversary Show in Nashville, Tennessee, on October 8, 2005, where he clinched the British Commonwealth title by defeating Dru Onyx. Subsequently, Finn moved to Santa Monica, California, to receive comprehensive wrestling training at the New Japan Inoki Dojo.
Millennium Wrestling Federation (MWF)
On November 5, 2005, Finn Bálor debuted in the MWF in a triple-threat match at Soul Survivor III, where he faced off against Eddie Edwards and R.J. Brewer. Finn’s television debut took place in December 2005 at MWF Ultra, in a match against Osiris. His impressive performance in the MWF caught the attention of various promoters, leading to an invitation for Finn to travel to Tokyo and train in Puroresu, a Japanese wrestling style, at the New Japan Pro-Wrestling Dojo.
Return to the NWA UK
After training in Tokyo for a while, Finn defended his title in the NWA British Commonwealth Heavyweight Championship on March 12, 2006. Unfortunately, he lost the title to American wrestler Karl Anderson. Between June 2 and September 1, 2007, Finn competed in the Reclaiming the Glory tournament, organized by the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) to determine a new NWA World Heavyweight Champion. In the first round, Finn triumphed over Australian wrestler Mikey Nicholls. However, he lost to Bryan Danielson in the second round, ending his pursuit of the NWA World Heavyweight Championship.
New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW)
After losing to Karl Anderson in March 2006, Finn signed with NJPW and made his debut under the name Prince Devitt against Osamu Matsuda (also known as El Samurai) in April 2006. Despite his efforts, Finn lost the match. In May 2006, NJPW decided to introduce Finn with a mask as the second Pegasus Kid. However, the fans didn’t respond positively, as they started comparing him to the famous WWE superstar Chris Benoit, who was the original Pegasus Kid. Consequently, Finn reverted to his previous ring name, Prince Devitt, in August 2006 during a New Japan tour.
Control Terrorism Unit
Finn joined the Control Terrorism Unit (CTU), an NJPW stable, as an apprentice under the name Ranger Red. After a series of losses, his teammates at CTU gave him an ultimatum. Finn met their expectations by winning a crucial match on October 6, 2006. Subsequently, he allied with Jushin Thunder Liger, the CTU leader, against Wataru Inoue and Ryusuke Taguchi. Finn solidified his position in CTU after defeating Wataru Inoue.
Finn temporarily stepped away from wrestling after injuring his knee during the match with Wataru, which led to CTU sidelining him. Upon his return in June 2007, he competed in the Best of the Super Juniors tournament but was defeated. Finn left CTU in August 2007 when it disbanded and joined another NJPW stable, RISE.
Prince Prince
While at RISE, Finn formed an alliance with Minoru, an ex-CTU member, and together they established a new tag team called Prince Prince. This team secured the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship on January 27, 2008. On July 21, 2008, team Prince Prince claimed the title once again. However, in October 2008, team No Limit defeated Prince Prince, taking the title from them.
Apollo 55
On January 30, 2009, the team Prince Prince disbanded, and Finn joined forces with Ryusuke Taguchi to create Apollo 55. Finn and Taguchi captured the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship title by defeating Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin of The Motor City Machine Guns (also known as Guns). In May 2009, Finn competed in the Best of the Super Juniors competition, where he eventually lost to Koji Kanemoto in the final match. Later that year in December, he took part in the Super J-Cup but was outmatched in the final round by Naomichi Marufuji. On January 4, 2010, Apollo 55, with Finn as a member, successfully retained their tag team title against challengers Averno and Último Guerrero at Wrestle Kingdom IV in the Tokyo Dome. However, an injury to Finn during a match against Gedo and Dick Togo forced Apollo 55 to relinquish the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team title on February 14, 2010. Apollo 55 attempted to regain their lost title by participating in the Super J Tag Tournament, but they were bested by El Samurai and Koji Kanemoto on May 8, 2010. Following his victory over Kota Ibushi in the Best of the Super Juniors tournament final in June 2010, Finn had a shot at the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship, held by Naomichi Marufuji. He triumphed over Naomichi at Dominion 6.19 on June 19, 2010, securing the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship.
On June 30, 2010, Finn, Taguchi, and Hirooki Goto teamed up to clinch victory in the J Sports Crown Openweight 6-Man Tag Tournament, besting Hiroshi Tanahashi, TAJIRI, and Kushida. Finn successfully defended his junior heavyweight title against Atsushi Aoki on July 11, 2010, following Aoki’s challenge. Apollo 55, with Finn as a member, overcame Koji Kanemoto and El Samurai to capture the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship on July 19, 2010. On September 3, 2010, Finn retained his junior heavyweight title in a match against Canadian wrestler Kenny Omega. The Golden☆Lovers, the tag team of Omega and Kota Ibushi, triumphed over Apollo 55 to win the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship at Destruction ’10 on October 11, 2010. Apollo 55 retaliated by overcoming Kenny Omega and Kota Ibushi, regaining the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship at the Fantastica Mania 2011 on January 23, 2011. Finn was eliminated by his own tag team partner, Ryusuke Taguchi, in the semifinals of the 2011 Best of the Super Juniors tournament. On June 18, 2011, Finn yielded the junior heavyweight title to Kota Ibushi. He suffered another defeat against Ibushi in July 2011 when Ibushi successfully defended his junior heavyweight title.
Finn was among a few NJPW wrestlers who traveled to Mexico to wrestle with Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL). Initially, due to a calf injury, Finn was barred from entering the ring. On March 23, 2012, he participated in his first six-man tag team main event at CMLL against Mephisto, Último Guerrero, and Volador Jr., emerging victorious by pinning Volador Jr. Subsequently, Finn challenged Volador Jr. to vie for the NWA World Historic Middleweight Championship, winning the title on March 30, 2012. He successfully defended the title against Volador Jr. in a rematch in Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall in July 2012 but lost it to a wrestler named Rojo on September 28, 2012. Apollo 55 took part in the Super Jr. Tag Tournament on October 21, 2012, triumphing over the then IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions, Alex Koslov and Rocky Romero, in the semifinals. However, Finn and Taguchi were defeated in the final round by Time Splitters, a tag team formed by Alex Shelley and Kushida. Finn regained the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship at Power Struggle in Osaka, Japan, by pinning Low Ki. He successfully defended the title against Low Ki and Kota Ibushi in a three-way match in January 2013 and then against his tag team partner Taguchi on February 10, 2013. Following his loss to Hiroshi Tanahashi in a non-title match at New Japan’s 41st Anniversary Show on March 3, 2013, Finn took on a more villainous persona and began taunting other wrestlers, yet he endeavored to keep a friendly relationship with his tag team partner Taguchi. After being challenged by Alex Shelley for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship, Finn defended his title successfully on April 5, 2013. On April 7, 2013, Finn and Taguchi challenged Alex Shelley and Kushida for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team title but were unsuccessful. After this defeat, Finn assaulted Taguchi, effectively ending their partnership.
Bullet Club
Following the dissolution of his partnership with Taguchi, Devitt went on to establish Bullet Club. The club initially included only Bad Luck Fale and Devitt, but it later expanded to include Karl Anderson and Tama Tonga. The name ‘Bullet Club’ was coined by Devitt, inspired by his finger gun gesture and Karl Anderson’s moniker, ‘The Machine Gun.’
On May 3, 2013, Devitt and Fale faced off against Devitt’s former tag team partner Taguchi and Captain New Japan at Wrestling Dontaku in Fukuoka, coming out victorious. Devitt emerged as the champion of the Best of the Super Juniors tournament on June 9, 2013, after beating Alex Shelley in the finals. This triumph led him to challenge Hiroshi Tanahashi for an opportunity at the IWGP Heavyweight Championship title. At Dominion 6.22 in Osaka, Devitt secured his shot at the heavyweight title by overcoming Hiroshi Tanahashi on June 22, 2013. The then-IWGP Heavyweight Champion, Kazuchika Okada, agreed to face Devitt on the condition that Devitt would first defend his IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship title against Gedo. Devitt successfully defended his title against Gedo on July 5, 2013. Despite attempts by Bullet Club members to disrupt the title match against Okada on July 22, 2013, Okada successfully defended his title. From November 23 to December 7, Devitt and Fale participated in the World Tag League but were bested by Captain New Japan and Hiroshi Tanahashi in the quarterfinals. On January 4, 2014, at Wrestle Kingdom 8 in the Tokyo Dome, Kota Ibushi defeated Devitt to claim the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship. For this match, Devitt made a theatrical entrance, arriving in a casket with Bullet Club members standing by the ring in aprons. In April 2014, Devitt chose to depart from the New Japan Pro-Wrestling.
WWE
NXT
On May 15, 2014, Devitt inked a contract with WWE. The organization publicly announced his recruitment to NXT on July 28, 2014. Subsequently, his ring name was altered from Prince Devitt to Finn Bálor on September 24, 2014. His new name was inspired by Fionn mac Cumhaill, a legendary Irish hero, and Balor, a Gaelic term signifying the Demon King. Finn made his NXT debut on September 25, 2014, when he came to Hideo Itami’s aid against The Ascension members Konnor and Viktor. His first tag team match occurred on October 23, 2014, when he teamed up with Itami to overcome Justin Gabriel and Tyson Kidd.
Finn introduced his now-signature demonic body paint during NXT TakeOver: R Evolution on December 11, 2014, when he and Itami secured victory over Konnor and Viktor in a tag team bout.
Finn emerged victorious at NXT TakeOver: Rival on February 11, 2015, after he outperformed Adrian Neville in the final round. Despite a valiant effort, Finn was defeated by Kevin Owens in an NXT Title match on March 25, 2015. However, he rebounded to claim the NXT Championship after defeating Kevin Owens at The Beast in the East event held in Tokyo on July 4, 2015.
At NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn, Finn managed to retain his NXT Championship title by defeating Kevin Owens in a ladder match on August 22, 2015. Later, Balor partnered with Samoa Joe to compete in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. The pair triumphed over Sin Cara and Kalisto in the opening round, Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady in the quarterfinals, and Dash Wilder and Scott Dawson in the semifinals. On October 7, 2015, at NXT TakeOver: Respect, Finn and Samoa bested Baron Corbin and Rhyno in the finals, thereby winning the tournament. Subsequently, Apollo Crews issued a challenge to Finn for the NXT Championship title. A bout between Finn and Apollo Crews was scheduled on November 4, 2015, but it was abruptly disrupted when Baron Corbin attacked Finn during the match. As Samoa Joe intervened, Baron fled the ring, but then Samoa turned on Finn, ending their partnership and igniting a feud between them. Finn successfully defended his NXT Championship title against Joe on December 16, 2015, at NXT TakeOver: London. However, on April 21, 2016, Finn lost his title to Joe during the main event of NXT in Lowell, Massachusetts. Prior to his loss to Joe, Finn held the record for the longest reign as NXT Champion, a record surpassed by Adam Cole in 2020. Finn experienced his first NXT TakeOver defeat on June 8, 2016, when he was overpowered by Samoa Joe in a steel cage match for the NXT Championship at NXT TakeOver: The End.
On July 30, 2016, Finn joined forces with Shinsuke Nakamura in a tag team match to overcome Bobby Roode and Samoa Joe.
Raw
Finn made his entrance into WWE’s RAW brand on 19 July 2016. His debut match on Raw occurred on 25 July 2016 where he emerged victorious from a fatal four-way match against Rusev, Cesaro, and Kevin Owens.
He later faced Roman Reigns, who had won a similar fatal four-way match, and defeated him, earning a shot at the WWE Universal Championship at SummerSlam. On 21 August 2016 at SummerSlam, Finn triumphed over Seth Rollins, becoming the inaugural WWE Universal Champion. However, due to a labrum tear sustained during his match with Seth, Finn was forced to relinquish the title to undergo surgery.
While he was sidelined from WWE due to his injury, Finn made an appearance at the WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament in December 2016. On 22 February 2017, he made a comeback on NXT, teaming up with Shinsuke Nakamura against Andrade “Cien” Almas and Bobby Roode. In March 2017, he made his Raw return in a live event, teaming up with Chris Jericho and Sami Zayn to overcome Kevin Owens, Samoa Joe, and Triple H. On 3 April 2017, Finn made his televised return at WrestleMania 33, joining forces with Seth Rollins to defeat Kevin Owens and Samoa Joe. Finn lost his opportunity to reclaim the Universal Championship title from Brock Lesnar when he passed out during the fatal five-way extreme rules match due to Samoa Joe’s Coquina Clutch.
A rivalry ensued with Bray Wyatt when Wyatt interfered in a No Disqualification match between Elias and Finn, resulting in Finn’s loss. On 20 August 2017 at SummerSlam, Finn reprised his Demon King persona to vanquish Wyatt. He triumphed over Wyatt again at No Mercy on 24 September 2017. Finn was scheduled to face off against Bray Wyatt’s Sister Abigail character at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs on 20 October 2017, but Wyatt had to withdraw due to illness. He was replaced by AJ Styles, who was defeated by the Demon King in the match, with both wrestlers showing respect to each other by making “Too Sweet” hand gestures.
In January 2018, Finn established the Bálor Club with Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson, a tribute to his former NJPW club, the Bullet Club. The Bálor Club won its first match against reigning Tag Team Champions Seth Rollins and Jason Jordan and reigning Intercontinental Champion Roman Reigns in a six-man tag team match.
Finn was the second entrant in the 2018 Royal Rumble match, where he lasted 57 minutes, eliminated four competitors, but was eventually ousted by John Cena. On 20 August 2018, he challenged Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship title but was defeated. In November 2018, Raw announced Finn as one of its representatives in the Raw vs SmackDown five-on-five elimination match at Survivor Series. However, he was eliminated by Rey Mysterio of SmackDown. In January 2019, a fatal-four-way match was held to find a replacement for Braun Strowman in the Universal Championship match against Brock Lesnar after Strowman was disqualified for attacking and damaging the WWE owner’s limousine. Finn won this match by pinning John Cena but was subsequently defeated by Brock in the Universal Championship match. Finn then claimed the Intercontinental Champion title on 17 February 2019 after besting Rush and Bobby Lashley at the Elimination Chamber in a two-on-one handicap match.
SmackDown
In 2019, following the WWE Superstar Shake-up, Finn transitioned to SmackDown. He debuted on the brand on 16 April 2019, achieving victory over Ali in a non-title bout. On 7 June 2019, Finn donned his Demon King persona to compete in an Intercontinental Championship match against Andrade, where he successfully retained his title.
Coming back to NXT

In a match against Kyle O’Reilly on October 4, 2020, Finn successfully held onto his NXT Championship, despite suffering a broken jaw that required surgery. Following his recovery, Finn made a triumphant return to NXT, successfully defending his NXT Championship on January 6 and March 10, 2021. On April 8, 2021, at NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver, Finn was bested by Karrion Kross, losing the NXT Championship. Finn returned to SmackDown on July 16, 2021, where he encountered Roman Reigns twice in contests for the WWE Universal Championship title.

In October 2021, Finn returned to Raw and competed in the King of the Ring tournament, where he was defeated by Xavier Woods at the Crown Jewel event. On February 28, 2022, Finn clinched the WWE United States Champion title by besting Damien Priest, only to lose it to Theory on April 18, 2021. On June 5, 2021, Finn formed an alliance with AJ Styles and Liv Morgan for a mixed tag team match against Edge, Damian Priest, and Rhea Ripley of The Judgement Day. Despite their best efforts, Finn’s team ended up on the losing side. The next day, on June 6, 2021, Finn was welcomed into The Judgement Day by Edge, but the moment was disrupted when Finn, Rhea, and Damien ambushed Edge, effectively driving him out of the team and solidifying Finn’s role as a villain within the team.
On July 30, 2022, The Mysterios, a tag team composed of Rey Mysterio and his son Dominik Mysterio, triumphed over The Judgement Day in a tag team title match at SummerSlam. In a shocking turn of events at Clash at the Castle on September 3, 2022, Dominik Mysterio betrayed his father and tag team partner Edge, joining The Judgement Day. Finn was ousted by Edge in the Royal Rumble on January 28, 2023, though Edge was subsequently eliminated by Damian Priest with outside assistance from Dominik and Finn. In his Demon King persona, Finn competed against Edge in a Hell in a Cell match at WrestleMania 39 but suffered a defeat.
