Career
Beginning of Career
O’Malley competed in his first five fights in his hometown Montana. Later on, he moved on to compete in North Dakota and later joined the Legacy Fighting Alliance. There, he secured a knockout victory against David Nuzzo. This win led to his participation in Dana White’s Contender Series 2, where he faced Alfred Khashakyan. O’Malley’s impressive first-round knockout earned him a contract with the UFC.
Ultimate Fighting Championship
O’Malley made his debut against Terrion Ware on 1 December 2017, at The Ultimate Fighter 26 Finale, and secured a victory via unanimous decision. His next bout was against Andre Soukhamthath on 3 March 2018, at UFC 222. Despite a foot injury in the third round, O’Malley won by a unanimous decision. Both the fighters earned the “Fight of the Night” bonus.
He was to compete against José Alberto Quiñónez at UFC 229 on 6 October 2018. However, O’Malley withdrew on 30 September due to potential Anti-Doping Policy violations. While waiting for the result of the matter, he got hip surgery on 25 October 2018. Later, after testing positive for ostarine, the NSAC suspended him for six months, making him eligible to compete from March 2019. O’Malley was scheduled to fight against Marlon Vera on 6 July 2019, at UFC 239. However, due to a positive test for ostarine, he withdrew on 21 June 2019. The Nevada State Athletic Commission later suspended him, and the USADA issued a six-month suspension. The presence of ostarine was believed to be residual from his previous failed test prior to UFC 229.

O’Malley was next to face Louis Smolka at UFC 264 on 10 July 2021. However, due to Smolka’s injury, Kris Moutinho, a newcomer to the promotion, was set to be the replacement. O’Malley won with a third-round TKO, receiving the “Fight of the Night” award.
On 11 December 2021, O’Malley competed against Raulian Paiva at UFC 269 and secured a first-round TKO victory, earning him the “Performance of the Night” award for the fourth time. Later on, he faced Pedro Munhoz on 2 July 2022, at UFC 276. The fight ended early in the second round due to an eye poke by O’Malley unintentionally, which resulted in a no-contest decision.
On 22 October 2022, at UFC 280, O’Malley fought with Petr Yan and won by a close split decision. The decision caused a major debate, as 25 of 26 media outlets believed Yan had the upper hand. Nevertheless, their bout was recognized with the “Fight of the Night” bonus.

Controversy
An Open Marriage Controversy
Sean O’Malley said on a podcast, that his wife said a “yes” when he proposed an open marriage to her, which resulted that O’Malley could have casual relationships with anyone else, and the same would be the case for his wife. However, O’Malley thinks that it is justified for him to be around other women because he is a man, but his wife, being a female, should not be allowed to do something like that. He ended up blaming the highly popular celebrity, Andrew Tate for this saying,
Until Andrew Tate came along, I was like, You can, and then Tate was like, Girls can’t do that, and I was like, Yeah, f*ck that. Everyone has a different take on what an open relationship is. I’d like to think of ours as an open-minded relationship where we don’t own each other. I don’t own her and she doesn’t own me… She knew, she didn’t fall in love with a fake me. She knew who she was falling in love with. Cause I was myself.” 2

I justified it as a tax write-off. I mean, I guess it is. You know, I got a certain loan because I wrapped it in the color of my [merchandise], it’s advertisement. I dropped the watermelon Suga, the pink and green merch, happens to be the same color as the Lamborghini… It’s marketing. Now, it’s just sitting in my garage. I take it out for a little spin every once in a while. But yeah, it’s f**king fun, I love it.”
